L2P - Learner Driver Mentor Program

Volunteers needed for an innovative program that will benefit young drivers

In 2007 a new Graduated Licensing system was introduced making it compulsory for learner drivers to complete 120 hours of learner driver experience. Unfortunately however a number of young people face considerable difficulties in gaining access to this driving experience. This can be due to not having access to a supervised driver, or vehicle or both. VicRoads has recognised these issues and has made available funding for organisations to run a learner driver mentor program called ‘L2P’. The program involves volunteer licensed drivers from the community providing supervision to young drivers, in a car provided by the program. Kooweerup Regional Health Service in partnership with the Cardinia Council have received funding to run this program in this local area. We are currently seeking expressions of interest from volunteers. Volunteers will need to hold a current drivers licence, undergo relevant police and working with children checks (paid for by the program), and participate in a small number of free training workshops.

There are many benefits for both the learner driver and volunteers, and volunteers who have participated in the program in other communities have found the experience very rewarding. If you would like to find out more about this program or register your interest could you please contact Toby at the Kooweerup Regional Health Service on (03) 5997 9687.
